This delightfully crooked tune has a fascinating time signature, shifting between four and three, and the best way to count it is "1 - 2, 1 - 2 - 3, 1 - 2  - 1 - 2" (as depicted in the chord chart that comes with this backing track). It was written by West Virginia fiddler Ernie Carpenter, about his troubles with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers damming up his beloved Elk River. He is quoted as saying "I was sittin' here one day, an' I had the blues. I reckon as bad as anybody could, thinkin' about my old homeplace up on the Elk River. I started sawin' on the fiddle an' that's what I came up with".
