Ever hear those long flowing runs that the Melodic Style banjo players like to toss out, that sound like waterfalls of notes and give you goose bumps? or maybe you just really like the tunes Blackberry Blossom and Grisman's Opus 39, but are not sure why? Well it's because you're hearing Scale Patterns, and they are the DNA of fiddle tunes and many melodic forms of music. Scale Patterns are some of the most incredibly powerful tools you can add to your banjo arsenal, and are great for improvisation and lick building. When you launch into a Scale Pattern, it's like a musical escalator that you get to ride until you think of your next idea, and will greatly expand you knowledge of the fingerboard as well as give you a slick new sound to employ at future jams.

In this lesson we cover the three fundamental patterns in the keys of G, C and D, and also give you practice loops and the end where we play them over and over so you can get plenty of flight time on them. And of course like all of our eLessons, we also give you full band backing tracks to jam along with. This lesson will revolutionize your playing!

This is hard for me. If you’re going to get better, you gotta practice things that you aren’t good at. This is one of those things. I know it will improve my playing immensely, but it’s just so hard!
