Playing "boom chucks" is the cornerstone of bluegrass banjo back-up playing, and the secret to sounding good in jam sessions. Sure you can learn fancy leads and hot licks, but unless you know how to accompany the other players when it's their turn, your chances of getting asked back to the jam diminish.
This lesson provides a great workout on five classic bluegrass songs: Boil Them Cabbage Down, Cripple Creek, Rollin in my Sweet Baby's Arms, Tom Dooley and You Are My Sunshine. Each song is played through four times, once slow and once faster, so you get plenty of flight time on your boom chuck back up playing.

This is fantastic. I have never understood how to do this until now.
