As anyone who's been to even a single jam session knows, playing backup is of paramount importance (that is, if you want to be asked back!). And for the fiddle, there are few techniques more effective than the "Chop". This is the art of playing percussively, using the bow-hair near the frog to create a crunchy "chopping" noise, which can create an array of rhythms. In this in-depth lesson you will not only learn how to Chop in 2/4, 3/4 and 6/8 ("jig") time, but you will also learn chopping to three awesome songs in several keys. We'll teach you Bury me Beneath the Willow in both G and A, you'll learn to chop along to the classic Irish tune The Swallowtail Jig, and then you'll get to play Paradise by John Prine. The video also includes "karaoke style" play-alongs with interactive charts showing which chord you're on, and of course audio tracks for all he songs with adjustable tempo. This lesson will revolutionize your fiddling, get started on the art of Chopping today! Musical examples in this lesson are provided by guest instructor Avery Risling-Sholl, a master-fiddler well versed in Celtic styles and past attendee of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
