Description
One of the advantages of the Melodic Style of playing banjo is that you can render all sorts of scales in a smooth legato fashion. Melodic players often use blues scales, pentatonic scales, and even modes to spice up their playing. But of all these, definitely the most flashy is the Chromatic Scale. Coming from the Greek “chroma” meaning color, this scale has every single note in it and climbs up and down the neck fret by fret. The licks in this lesson will give you an edge when you need it, as they can be used for pretty much any key or progression, and definitely get attention. With that being said, we encourage you not to over use these, and save them for that special moment in a jam when you want to make a statement 🙂
Disclaimer: if you do not already have a solid understanding of the Melodic Style of playing, we highly recommend you postpone this lesson until after you’ve spend some time on our Beginning Melodic Style Lesson (yes, click on that title and get it). Then come on back here and get to chromatisizing!
