A popular bluegrass jam song, this song was made famous by the renowned American rock band
Grateful Dead on their 1973 album
History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One (Bear’s Choice). “Dark Hollow” was originally written by folk singer/songwriter Bill Browning in 1958, and ever since has been performed by such greats as Doc Watson, David Grisman, and even Bela Fleck, and is pretty much a must-have in your song bag.
This mandolin arrangement is not too hard to play but still fancy enough to challenge you a bit and get some attention from other man-do pickers. We do use a good bit of "tremolo" in this arrangement, so if you haven't done this technique yet, we strongly encourage you to check out our lesson on
Tremolo Playing first (it will make your time with this lesson much more enjoyable!)
