This song of unrequited love goes far back into the balladeer traditions, when stories were sung around campfires with plenty-full lyrics. In this tale our hero asks the lady if he can ask her mother for her hand, and she replies “No I’ll not go ask my mother, where she lies on her bed of rest, in her hand she holds a dagger…to kill the man that I love best”. Talk about a nasty mother in law!
