So many aspiring blues guitarists get stuck in the "scale trap" when learning how to solo. They learn all the hot blues scales, but then after awhile wonder why it sounds like they're just running scales! Or, they go the opposite route and succumb to the temptation of learning the blues solos of their idols note for note. And so as long as someone at the jam happens to call that exact song, they'll be able to pull off an awesome solo...but this rarely (if ever) happens. So on the one side learning too many scales and not knowing how to bring them to life is a problem, but equally frustrating is mimicking other players but not knowing how to create your own solos.
The solution? Blues Licks! These two measure riffs are the perfect building blocks for soloing, and come with all the cool sounds already built-in. When you learn to use Blues Licks your improvisation will go from sounding clunky to sizzling hot, overnight. And this lesson teaches you exactly that. You'll learn professional sounding riffs for the popular blues keys of E, A, D and G, and we give you
two different licks for each key. Not only do we walk you through each lick note-for-note, but then we play them along with a full blues band backing track, so you can have fun rocking out as you learn them. And when you're ready, you'll use the backing track audio to practice adding these licks into your improv, just like a Stevie Ray Vaughn or an Eric Clapton (and yes, this is exactly the trick they are using).
This lesson leads into another smoldering blues video, "Using Blues Licks to Build a Solo", where you'll learn how to shred over the super popular "12 bar blues" progression, so the fun never stops!
