The quickest way you can get that cool Old-Timey sound when you starting out on the fiddle is to learn the shuffle, and the best tune to do that on is Boil Them Cabbage Down. This lesson will get you started on the basic shuffles you need, as well as the double-stops (fiddle chords) for G and C, and finishes with a classy Lead part that you can start playing at jams tomorrow.
